Viscosity of oil

Oil fluidity – i.e. degree of its density or a razzhizhennost – has to be suitable for application in the engine. Compliance to two criteria is necessary:

  • It should not be too viscous as the starter has to turn the cold motor so that after cold start oil reached at once all points of greasing.
  • It should not be too liquid because at high temperatures and turns in an oil film there can be gaps.

On graphics recommendations of Audi/Volkswagen firms concerning viscosity of oil are shown:

And – all-weather oils according to the VW 500 00 standard;
In – all-weather oils according to the VW 500 01 standard.

The called parameters are understood as for a long time operating temperatures. Short-term fluctuations do not play a role.

Classes of oils according to SAE

Society of autotractor engineers (Society of Automotive Engineers, the USA) divided all oils on degree of their viscosity into classes. Classification of engine oils begins with liquid winter oil (winter – Winter)   SAE 5 W, 10 W, 15 W, then an intermediate step of SAE 20 W/20 and comes to an end with viscous summer oils (summer – Sommer) SAE 30, 40 and 50.

Seasonal oil

Seasonal oil was the cheapest engine oil earlier. For optimum greasing of the engine in it it is necessary to fill in dense or liquid seasonal oil according to a season. Now seasonal oils are almost not on sale (Germany means), but they still are often applied in vehicle fleets. Use of seasonal oil is not provided in Audi A4.

All-weather oil

More trudozatratny in production and therefore more expensive, than seasonal oil, all-weather oil found the broadest application today. For improvement of viscous and temperature properties (VI) in it long chains of molecules which when heating inflate contain in quality of additive and again contract when cooling. In this regard oil can plastically adapt to temperature and according to the characteristics to cover some classes of viscosity. SAE 15 W-50 oil at a temperature of -15 °C corresponds to a class of viscosity 15 W and at 100 °C – to a class 50.

All-weather oils of the classes SAE 10 W-30 and 10 W-40 are not recommended for application in Audi engines in a warm season.
